December 18, 2000:

AROSE - This search engine from The National Bureau of Asian Research lets you search the pages of more than 300 Asia-related research institutions. Very useful for academics.

November 27, 2000:

Philippine Center for Investigative Journalism  - In-depth, critical and independent stories from a country where this type of journalism certainly is needed.    

November 20, 2000:

Asia Daily  - User-friendly portal to the latest news from Asia.   

October 30, 2000:

SEAPA  - Southeast Asian Press Alliance - dedicated to the important task of defending press freedom throughout the ASEAN region.   

October 23, 2000:

Asia-Inc  - the redesigned web site has been developed into a useful portal for people doing business in Asia.  

October 16, 2000:

AsiaWise  - an excellent resource for independent analysis of Asia's financial markets - written by very experienced journalists.  

October 9, 2000: 

Asia Business Today  - a new resource from Asia Society.  Very useful starting point for people interested in business in Asia.  

September 25, 2000:

Free Burma Coalition  - one of the many good activist sites that are dedicated to fight against the military regime in Burma/ Myanmar. 

September 18, 2000: 

Tempo, Indonesia  - once banned under Suharto, the Tempo magazine today is an excellent source of information about current affairs in Indonesia.  

September 11, 2000:

BBC News: Asia-Pacific  - maybe the best place there is to keep track of the latest news from Asia. 

September 4, 2000:

East Timor Press  - the official web site for the East Timorese independent print news media. 

August 28, 2000:

Philippine Daily Inquirer  - the newspaper with the largest circulation in the Philippines. 

August 21, 2000:

Asian Financial Intelligence  - quick and efficient overview of financial news in the region - and plenty of depth for subscribers.

August 14, 2000:

Virtual China  - good China portal/community with news coverage and analysis. 

August 7, 2000:

Asiaco  - one of the best and most comprehensive Asia portals. 

July 17, 2000:

Asia Source  - a unique and comprehensive resource from Asia society. 

July 10, 2000:

Asian Studies WWW Virtual Library  - may look boring at first, but this oldtimer has a wealth of information for academics interested in Asia.  

July 3, 2000:

Webb-site  - a site as rare as an independent, non-profit commentary on Hong Kong business and finance - produced by a retired investment banker.  

June 26, 2000:

Agenda Malaysia  - a new web site offering analysis and perspectives about current developments in Malaysia, all very well written. 

June 19, 2000:

Asia Times  - the online version of the former newspaper is today an excellent digest - updated daily -  of interesting articles about Asia.  

June 12, 2000:

VientianeTimes.com  (not to be confused with the newspaper of the same name) is a good digest of news coverage about Laos. The site is run by dissidents in exile.

June 5, 2000:

The first summit with North and South Korea's leaders takes  place. Korea.net gives you the Seoul version of events with a special summit section. Korean Central News Agency presents the story as North Korea likes to tell it. 

May 29, 2000:

Asia Recovery Information Center - a wealth of information about the economic situation in Asian countries - provided by Asian Development Bank. 

May 22, 2000:

The Burma Project - 10 years have passed since Burma's generals refused to let Aung San Suu Kyi and the democratic opposition take power after an impressive election victory.  The Burma Project from the Open Society Institute is one of the best web sites about this country. 

May 15, 2000:

Taipei Times - the web site of the newest Taiwanese newspaper in English provides extensive coverage of the tense cross-straits relations. 

May 8, 2000:

The Jakarta Post - one of the best information sources for news and background about Indonesia. 

May 1, 2000:

Inside China - comprehensive news, background and discussions about the world's most populous nation.

April 24, 2000: 

Battlefield: Vietnam - 25 years after the fall of Saigon this site from PBS gives a brief and excellent introduction to the history of the Vietnam war.

April 17, 2000:

AccessAsia  - a unique database of experts on contemporary Asia - maintained by The National Bureau of Asian Research.

April 10, 2000:

The Cambodian Genocide Program  - an impressive web site from Yale University detailing the atrocities of the Khmer Rouge regime that came to power 25 years ago. 

April 3, 2000:

Timor Today  - an excellent web site with news and background from the new nation of East Timor. 

March 27, 2000:

WomenAsia - business network connecting women in Asia and North America

March 20, 2000:

Chinese military power - an excellent compendium of online resources about Chinese military policy and capabilities. 

March 13, 2000:  

Malaysiakini.com - offering independent and uncensored journalism, this online "newspaper" stands out in a country where the press normally is kept under control.
