Card. Zen: It is time to put into effect the Popes Letter to China’s Catholics, whatever the cost

The archbishop emeritus of Hong Kong says the Pope’s Letter has marked a new chapter in the life of the Church in China. But the criteria established by the pontiff regarding religious freedom are being watered down and rendered ambiguous. He fears a slide towards an era of comprise, in which the many efforts towards the Church in China are being made in vain. Religious freedom is more important that diplomatic relations. Today Beijing seems less interested in having relations with the Holy See, thanks to a relaxing in relations with Taiwan

Funeral of Msgr. Zhang Hanmin, bishop of Jilin

Bishop Damaso Zhang worked for the freedom of the Church despite the constraints posed by the regime and by the Patriotic Association. Because of Maoism, he had to wait 40 years to be ordained priest. Bishop Zhang was much loved by his people (70 thousand Catholic and 60 priests) and is one of the official Church figures who tried to live with total obedience to the pope and the Catholic Church despite the limitations imposed by the regime and the Patriotic Association

New bishop of Taizhou ordained, after nearly 50 years of vacant see

Approved by the Vatican. The Diocese of Taizhu was among the first to have a Chinese bishop in 1926. The newly ordained bishop has spent 25 years in hard labour. "In prison I discovered that God is close to me". No problems in the relationship between official and underground Christians. After decades the diocese is reborn

New bishop of Yulin (Yan’an), a PhD graduate from Rome

Mgr Yang Xiaoting is the new, Holy See-approved bishop coadjutor. Nine prelates, all in communion with the Pope, were present at the ceremony. The new bishop is also vice-rector of Xi’an seminary. Most Catholics in the diocese are from farming communities, dispersed across the plateaus of northern Shaanxi. Yan’an has a glorious place in China’s Communist history. At the end of the Long March, it was for a while the stronghold of the Revolution

Cardinal Zen: not true that “Beijing really wants Bishops appointed by the Pope”

There is still a long way to go in relations between Beijing and the Holy See on the appointment of bishops, which is not the result of an "agreement" but a "tug of war." The test of communion with the pope lies in the boycott of the Assembly of Representatives of Chinese Catholics. The tenacious cardinal of Hong Kong responds to an article by Gianni Valente of "30 Days".
