TAIPEI (XFN-ASIA) - Chunghwa Telecom Co Ltd (2412.TW), Taiwan's largest telecom operator, is studying the acquisition of up to 5 pct of PCCW Ltd unit HKT Group Holdings Ltd for about 3 bln twd, the Commercial Times reported, without citing sources.

Taiwan plans to scale back its military spending in 2009 amid warming ties with rival China, it was reported yesterday. Military spending will be 315.2 billion Taiwan dollars (10 billion US), a decline of 10.

The Chinese mainland was Taiwan's biggest export market in the first half, accounting for almost a third of the island's exports, according to the island's trade bureau. Taiwan's trade surplus with the mainland in the first half amounted to 24.
