Eye on Asia - Asia Observer’s blog

Welcome to the new Asia Observer

December 9th, 2006

Asia Observer has gone through a complete redesign. The new site offers many opportunities to interact with other users.

Since it was founded in 1999 Asia Observer has remained pretty much the same: A portal to Asia for people who follow news and developments in the region.
Welcome to a completely new Asia Observer! While much of the old content is still there, new functionality has been added in many areas. Asia Observer now to a much larger extent aspires to be an interactive community for its users. Users are thus encouraged to register as members and connect with other users. The success of the site depends on the contributions of the members.

Basically there are six kinds of content on Asia Observer:

  • Stories suggested by readers. These are featured on the front page.
  • News headlines from hundreds of media sources. There are news headlines both for Asia as such and for each specific country.
  • Web directory. This content is imported from the Open Directory Project, which aspires to be the largest human-edited web directory in the world. More than 5 million web sites are indexed. On Asia Observer you find an interface to the directory on each country page.
  • Asia Observer’s blog. The blog is written by the editor of Asia Observer and comments on events and developments in Asian countries.
  • Discussion forums. A great way to participate is to post your opinions in our forums. There are forums for specific countries as well as general topics.
  • Community. Interact with other users. Our members are encouraged to tell about themselves on their profile pages. You can search for other members and define your friends as “connections”.
  • We hope you like the new site. Please let us know if you have any suggestions for how we can make it even more useful, for instance by posting in the Asia Observer discussion forum or by commenting on this blog.
