YANGON, Myanmar - From shopkeepers handing out free rice porridge to medical students caring for the sick, ordinary people in Myanmar are stepping in to help cyclone victims as the military regime severely restricts international aid.

Taxi drivers, factory owners, college students, teachers and other Yangon residents — many of whom lost their own homes — are among those organizing grueling trips into the Irrawaddy delta, the hardest-hit region.

"They are true humanitarian heroes," said Bridget Gardner, International Red Cross representative in Myanmar, after touring an area where volunteers were giving first aid to the injured.

I have noticed that Burmese people are resilient people
they can survive even in the midst of unthinkable cruelty
and poverty gripping the nation due to its military government

but inspite of it all they made a choice to help
their fellowmen to make the place even a little better
for others-

they are changing the situation in the most humble way
they can. they have thousands of unsung heroes
serving as hope and light for the next generations.

Phymean Noun is helping give Cambodian children a chance at a better life.

I must do something to help these children get an education," she recalls thinking. "Even though they don't have money and live on the sidewalk, they deserve to go to school."

Six years after that incident, Noun is helping many of Phnom Penh's poorest children do just that.

Within weeks, she quit her job and started an organization to give underprivileged children an education. Noun spent $30,000 of her own money to get her first school off the ground.

In 2004, her organization -- the People Improvement Organization (PIO) -- opened a school at Phnom Penh's largest municipal trash dump, where children are a large source of labor.

Today, Noun provides 240 kids from the trash dump a free education, food, health services and an opportunity to be a child in a safe environment.

Heartbreaking situation but this woman made a differece and changed
things, turned it around and gave humanity hope-!

CNN:
Binggirl Clemente has worked in environmental advocacy in the Philippines for the past eight years. Today, she leads a project to recycle old billboards into bags backed by local NGO, the Earth Day Network.

CNN: What's the message you're trying to say with this project?

Clemente: What we're actually doing is information and we teach and campaign for a clean environment. We are teaching people to manage their waste so it will not create garbage. When you start mixing your waste, it will become garbage, it will be rubbish, but when you segregate it, it will be a resource.

People will have to start thinking that we need to recycle our waste, we don't just have to dump it. That's the main lesson we want to share with the whole world that when you're done with one thing, please don't throw it away, save it, it could be useful to some other people, it could be useful to your future needs. The more you save it, the more you're saving resources, you're saving it for the future needs.
