Relations between China and the European Union were put to the test again after Taiwan’s Ministry of National Defence said on Friday 5 February it had placed a rare order for equipment from a European manufacturer. The helicopter deal could prompt an angry reaction from Beijing, which claims sovereignty over Taiwan and which threatened last week to impose sanctions on US groups after a $6.4bn arms deal was struck between Washington and Taiwan earlier.
