Afghan president orders review of marital law
The Afghan president said Saturday he had ordered a review of a new law that critics say makes it legal for men to rape their wives, responding to criticism from around the world that included sharp comments from President Barack Obama.

Pakistan ordered an investigation Friday into a video of a woman being flogged in the former resort of Swat, where the government signed an agreement with a pro-Taliban cleric to allow sharia law.
Apparently filmed on a mobile phone, the video shows two men pinning down a burka-clad woman by her feet and shoulders, while a bearded man in a turban flogs her 34 times with a whip as she screams in agony. "Hold her," shouts the man with the whip. "Hold her legs," he shouts, as he thrashes the woman's buttocks with the crack of the whip

Pakistan’s Chief Justice Assails Attorney General Over Taliban Flogging
The newly restored chief justice of Pakistan displayed his reputation as a human rights advocate and a prod to the government on Monday, when he hauled the attorney general and other officials before the Supreme Court and rebuked them over the flogging of a 17-year-old woman in the Taliban-controlled area of Swat

Afghans rally against women's law
Scores of Afghan Shia women have protested against a new law, which they will take women's civil rights in the country back to the days of the Taliban. Human rights activists and lawyers gathered outside a Kabul university on Wednesday demanding "justice" and handing out a declaration saying the Shia Personal Status Law "insults the dignity of women"

Indian farmers selling wives and daughters to survive drought
Debt-ridden farmers in Bundelkhand (Uttar Pradesh) have reportedly been compelled to sell their wives and daughters to moneylenders in order to survive the drought that is currently ravaging much of India. The situation is such that State authorities have launched an investigation. The National Commission for Women is also sending a team to investigate the reports
