11 OCTOBER 1967 : AFGHAN PRIME MINISTER MAIWANDWAL RESIGNS

Mohammad Hashim Maiwandwal has been Afghan prime minister since 2 November 1965 to his retirement for heath reason on 11 October 1967.

After graduating from high school, he became a journalist, then in the 1950s a diplomat as ambassador to UK, USA and Pakistan.

In October 1965, after rioting and students killings, he was chosed as prime minister and establissed good retations with the students.

In 1966, he have founded a leftist royalist party, the Jam’iat Demokrate-ye Mottaraqi (Progressive Democratic Party).

After the Daoud coup, on November 1, 1973, he was arrested and killed the next day.

12 OCTOBER 1976 : CHINA ANNOUNCES HUA GUOFENG IS ITS NEW LEADER

On that day, China announces that Hua Guofeng is the successor of the Late Mao Zedong as Chairman of the CPC. But he was already in charge since 7 October.

Born on 16 February 1921, he joined the CCP in 1938 and took part to the anti-Japanese war.

He was Security minister in 1975. The next year, he replaced Zhou Enlai as Prime Minister and some days before his dead (9 September 1976), Mao Zedong chosed him as his successor.

Hua Guofeng line was : To think as Mao, to speaks as Mao, to act as Mao.

For the reformists leaded by Deng Xiaoping it was a necessity to oust him.

In December 1978, the Deng faction took the control of the Central committee. Hua Guofen losed the premiership in 1980 and the presidence of the party in 1981. Expelled from the Central Committee, he quit the Central committee in 2002.

13 OCTOBER 2006 : DEATH OF WANG GUANGMEI

Wang Guangmei was the widow of president Liu Shaoqi who served as the president or the PRC since 1959 to 1968 and died in jail during the Cultural Revolution

She was also put in jail and released only in 1979. She was a beautiful and talented women, speaking several foreign languages including French and English.

Her hard fate during the Cultural Revolution was not only due to the fact that she was the wife of Liu Shaoqing, but also, and mainly because Jiang Qing, the wife of Mao Zedong was very Jealous of her

14 OCTOBER 1947 : D. S. SENANAYAKE FISRT PRIME MINISTER OF CEYLAN

Don Stephan Senanayake has been the first Prime Minister of Ceylan (Now Sri Lanka) from october 1947 to march 1952.

Born in 1884, he entered in politics and served as Minister of Agriculture under the British rule from 1931 to 1946 and founded the Sri Lanka United National Party.

The new 1946 constitution opened the way to the independence and the Singhaleses formed their first government after elections won by Sennayake Party. Ceylan became fully independent on 4 February 1948.

He died on 22 March 1952 from a riding accident

15 OCTOBER 1957 : BIRTH OF MIRA NAIR INDIAN FILM DIRECTOR

Mira Nair is one of the most internationaly known Indian film director and producer who won several international rewards.

She studied sociology in Delhi University where she became involved in political streets theater and performed three years in an amateur drama company before going to study to the United States.

After some documentary she directed her first major film “Salaam Bombay” (1988) which won an Oscar at French Cannes festival.

Nair’s most popular film to date “Monsoon wedding” was awarded the Golden Lion award at the Venice Mostra film festival.

She is currently teaching in the United States and directing a new movie “Shantaram” (2008)

16 OCTOBER 1866 : A FRENCH NAVY FLEET ATTACKS KOREA

Under French emperor Napoleon III, France was the protector of the catholic missionnaries in the world.

After the slaughter of nine French missionaries in Korea, the French chargé d’affaires to China decided to send a fleet under the command of amiral Roze to revenge the killed missionaries and to overthrow the king of Korea.

On 16 October they took the Kwang-Hwa island at the mouth of Han river which lead to Seoul. They looted the royal treasures in the island but never took Seoul and withdraw on 21 November.

The French ministry of Foreign condemned this action.

17 OCTOBER 1967 : DEATH OF PU YI, THE LAST CHINESE EMPEROR

Pu Yi, under the name of Xuantong, selected by empress Cixi, became emperor as he has not yet three years old, with his father second Prince Chun as a regent.

After the establishment of the Republic by Sun Yat-sen on 1st January 1912, he abdicated on 12 February and authorized to leave in the Forbidden city up to he was expelled by warlord Feng Yuxiang in 1924.

After that, he resided in the Japanese concession in Tianjin. After Japan sized Manchuria in 1931 they named him as Chief of the Executive from 9 March 1932 , then as Mandchukuo emperor on 1st March 1934 with the name of Kangde.

After the collapse of Japan in 1945, he was captured by the Soviet army and bing to Siberia. But in 1950, Stalin decided on to give him to the new communist China where he was send for ten years in a reeducation camp where he applied to be a good communist.

After that he works and became a delegate to the Chinese People’s Political Consultative Conference and encouraged by Zhou written his memories “From Emperor to citizen”, published in 1964.

But during the Cultural Revolution, he was again put in jail and died of kidney and heart deseases on 17 October 1967.

His live has been put on screen by Bertolucci in a film named “The last emperor” (1987)

19 OCTOBER 1977 : PM TANIN THROWN OUT BY GENERAL KRIANGSAK CHOMANAN

After the 1976 unrests, Tanin Kraivixien, a lawer, had been call by the strong man, Admiral Sangad, to become Prime Minister. But after one year he decided to overthrow him and Kriangsack Chomanan, the supreme commander of the Army did the job.

Admiral Sangad, as head of the State Administration Council, named Kriangsak Prime Minister on 11 november 1977.

In an effort to restore a parliamentary democracy, Kriangsask set up a more mixed civilian and military government.

He lost the military’s support and then ran into fierce public opposition, with large street demonstrations when he increased prices for electricity and petrol.

He finally resigned on 29 February 1980

20 OCTOBER 1967 : DEATH OF SHIGERU YOSHIDA

Yoshida was a diplomat and two times Prime Minister of Japan. He was the one who on 8 September 1951, signed the San Francisco Peace Treaty (see this date)

The illegitimate son of a samourai and a geisha, he studied political sciences and became a diplomat. He has been vice-minister of Foreign Affairs, then ambassador to Italy and Great Britain. In 1944, we was jailed for his pacifist positions.

But, after the war, he was Prime Minister two times, doing a lot to develop Japanese economy ans establishing closed relations with the United States.

He died on 20 october 1967, 89 years old.
