30 AUGUST
30 AUGUST 1999 : EAST TIMOR CHOOSE INDEPENDENCE
In 1859 the Netherlands and Portugal signed a treaty according the east part of Timor island to Portugal and the west part to Netherlands. The east part became catholic and is now the second catholic country in Asia after the Philippines.
After the 1974 leftist revolution, Portugal gave independence to all its colonies. So, on 28 November 1975, the Fretilin (Frente Revolucionario de Timor-Leste) proclaimed independence, but was invaded by Indonesia on 5 December and included as the 27th province on July of the following year.
This move had been condemned by the United Nations and the international community except Australia. During the Suharto (1965-1998) area, it was out a question to put this question on the table. It was his successor Yusuf Habibie, who needed the international help after the financial crisis, who agreed to leave the East-Timor people to chose their destiny.
On 30 August 1999, after months of violence by pro-Indonesia militias, under the control of United Nations, the East-Timor people, with a 98,6 per cent toll of participation chose to become independent by 78,5 per cents of the voters. Put under UN administration, he got his full independence on 20 May 2002.

31 AUGUST
31 AUGUST 1957 : FEDERATION OF MALAYA INDEPENDENCE
The British got the lease of Penang in 1786, then of Singapore in 1824, but it is from 1874 to 1914 that they put the nine sultanates of the peninsular Malaysia under their rule. After the opposition of the local elite for a Malayan Union established in 1946 giving a very low level powers to the sultans, on 31 August 1957 the full independence was given to the Malaya Federation : The nine sultanates of the Malayan peninsula and the two states of Penang and Malacca.
It is only in 1963 that the current Federation of Malaysia with Singapore, Sarawak and Shabah was founded.
