A member of the Japanese imperial family, he was an uncle of Emperor Hirohito
After attending the Tokyo Milit ary Academy he was assigned to Paris as military attaché from 1925 to 1927 and became a full general in 1939
Two days after the Japanese defeat, Emperor Hirohito asked him to form a new cabinet, but he resigned two months later
