I am interested to know hong kong people here. This small, ":busy as a bee" territory where i learned to appreciate despite the language barrier since i donot fluently speak cantonese.

This room would speak more about domestic life in Hong kong and related stories involving culture and attitudes on how people face and decide living in accordance to situations and regulations mostly governing families inside the home.

Post edited by: linsi, at: 2007/09/05 05:16

Hong Kong has a very complicated status.
Hong Kong is governed under the principle of "one country, two systems", under which China has agreed to give the region a high degree of autonomy and to preserve its economic and social systems for 50 years from the date of the handover.

Hong Kong's constitution, the Basic Law, provides for the development of democratic processes. However, Beijing can veto changes to the political system and pro-democracy forces have been frustrated by what they see as the slow pace of political reform.

I have seen the endless struggles and pains of the chinese people, divide and seperate families due to
immigration laws complicating their lives even more.

A Hong Kong National father lives in Hong Kong, while his mainland chinese wife and children live in China.
The barrier? Immigration laws.I am talking here of those who haven't made it yet to acquire the Hong Kong resident status to unite them as families. They have to live seperately. Are there hundreds of thousands of families still hanging and waiting?

Under the "one country two systems" principle, Hong kong is united or torn apart by the joint basic law of UK and China.

Population: 6.9 million (via UN, 2006)
Area: 1,098 sq km (424 sq miles)

Funny but this small territory could not acomodate millions from Mainland China.

Am I spamming? Where are those from Hong Kong? Hello there Last night I attended the Chinese Lunar Festival, With the clients and staff from work, I just learned that they celebrate the lunar year twice. One is the beginning which is the Chinese Lunar Winter Festival, and the closing of the holidays, the Chinese Lunar Spring Festival. I doubt if i am in the right position to write something about their culture since i really donot know but i hope a real one comes up to share us the unique heritage Hong Kong has.

hi there

news were all around about hong kong using too much.

A report by the Word Wide Fund for Nature explains that Hong Kong people are using 75% more natural resources than the average world citizen. The report, titled The Living Planet Report, compares countries and regions by ranking how much pressure they exert on the world's limited resources through their consumption of grain, meat, and fish, their use of timber and cement, and their production of carbon dioxide emissions. Overall, Hong Kong ranked 26th out of 152 world countries studied.

now there is good news for us,
every first tuesday of the month,we are then required to use paper bags or our own cloth bags to bag our groceries and what we bought from the shops. all plastic bags are discouraged or else we have to pay 50 cents per plastic bag which in turn goes to environmental friendly programs.

this is good.

Hong Kong - and even more so mainland China - still has a long way to go in environmental policies. You mention the plastic bags. Is the govenment also taking other measures towards making the city more environment friendly?

Is this amusing? we have our own culture of being such when talking about coffins, i don't know about others, but cardboard coffins? I posted a recent article about it. Yes, Hong Kong's one form of promoting eco-system and being friendly to environment

Here is an excerpt from the article which says:

"Although the cardboard coffins are more efficient and are said to produce less toxic gas during combustion, they aren't likely to be popular in Hong Kong, where skimping on the traditional Chinese rituals of sending the dead away is seen as a sign of disrespect.

But Hong Kongers should try to accept the advantages of the coffins, said to be gaining popularity in Japan and Europe, Yau said."

Did you misunderstand me - or maybe I am misunderstanding? I did not talk about plastic bags for the dead, but for groceries, as mentioned by you in your previous posting.

Just to clarify ...

oh
where were we? I thought you were asking me

"Is the govenment also taking other measures towards making the city more environment friendly?"

so i came up with a new information about eco-coffins for hong kong as one measure proposed for environment friendly programs aside from the one i mentioned about the plastic bags for groceries which are discouraged every first tuesday of the month, using paper or cloth bags instead. i hope i could come up for more.

anyway going back to this piece of article about coffins, i agree that here in hong kong eco-coffins is another way of being friendly to the environment.
