I used to live in Hong Kong from 1997 until 2000 - it was a great time in a great city. As a journalist covering the handover on July 1st 1997 was one of my best memories.

Personally I always used to view Hong Kong as having transferred from one colonial power to another. While the last British governor, Chris Patten, tried to rush some democratic reforms, over all the British had not done that much to promote democracy for the people of Hong Kong. Beijing, in this regard continued in pretty much the same way - as a colonial power.

I still think that is the right way to look at it. Hong Kong is more than anything else a Chinese colony. One reason for this is that the people of Hong Kong never were asked - neither by the British nor the Chinese - what they wanted for themselves.

That being said, the people of Hong Kong are pragmatic. They have adjusted to the situation and are making good money from their close association with their colonial masters in Beijing.
