On 24 July 2007, The United Nations has rejected Taiwan membership bid to join the NU under the name of Taiwan in lieu of Republic of Taiwan.

The raison given is that in 1971, when Beijing replaced Taibei as the sole representative of China. It was a time when Chiang Kai-shek and Mao Zedong pretended to be the sole representative of a one China.

Now Taiwan want to join as a different country.

Good, I never liked Chiang Kai Shek. Jacques that was a very good article you posted earlier about the obstacles to reunification with the mainland, one of which is, of course, that some of those still in power on the mainland are the original players from the Long March days. I think I remember some time ago, reading about some Kuomintang leftovers being discovered in the jungles of Burma involved in drug-running or something.
