9 SEPTEMBER 2001 :AFGHAN NATIONAL HERO MASSOUD KILLED
The northern Afghan coalition leader Ahmed Shah Massoud was killed by two fake journalists (in fact two Algerian Al-Qaida members). He has been an anti-soviet occupation hero and the main force against the Taliban. His killing was just two days before the September 11 attack on US. The reason of this killing is that he was the only one capable to fight the Taliban who were the protectors of Ben Laden and his,Al-Qaida members in Afghanistan.

11 SEPTEMBER 1917 : BIRTH OF FERDINAND MARCOS, PRESIDENT OF THE PHILIPPINES (1965-1986)
Today, Ferdinand Marcos would be 90 years old if he was always on life. He has been president of the Philippines for 21 years after defeating president Macapagal on 30 December 1965 elections.
On 21st September 1972, under the excuse of the leftist and muslim insurgencies, he declares the martial law. His regime becomes more and more authoritarian and corrupted. At that time he is supported by the US as an ally in the Vietnam war. On July 1973, he mades a new constitution who authorizes him to stay president all his life
His main mistake has been the murder of Ninoy Aquino, the opposition leader coming back from exile, on the tarmac of Manila airport on 21st August of 1983. That was the starting of mass demonstrations leaded by Aquino widow, Cory Aquino, supported by the very influent Filipina catholic church.
On 25 February 1986, he abandons the presidential palace and flies to Hawaii with an huge amount of gold bares and dollars. He dies there on September 28, 1989

12 SEPTEMBER 2007
12 SEPTEMBER 1997 : OPENING OF THE CCP XVth CONGRESS
This congress was important because it was the first one since the death of Deng Xiaoping. There was two big questions.
1)Is the general secretary Jiang Zemin, protégé of Deng Xiaoping capable to keep his position? Can the old guard with Qiao Shi (number 3 in the Party and president of the National Assembly) put him aside ?
2)What to do with the Prime Minister Li Peng who is number 2 in the Party hierarchy, but cannot be reelected for a third term as PM ? He is the head of an important faction : the sons of founders of the party sent to Soviet Union for learning. Too unpopular, he cannot take the place of Jiang Zemin. The only one suitable position for him is to become president of the NPA, but Qiao Shi don’t want to give up.
The XVth congress ended on September 18. So you will have the result on that day.
The below picture is the hierarchy of the CCP that was in charge between 1992 and 1997. For my 18th September comment, note that Qiao Shi is number 3 and admiral Liu Huaqing number 6.
