29 SEPTEMBER 1967 : PRESIDENT JOHNSON PROPOSES TO HANOI TO STOP BOMBIMGS IN EXCHANGE FOR NEGOCIATIONS

On March 2, 1965, following an attack on a US Marines barrack at Pleiku (South Vietnam), the USA decided to launch the Operation Rolling Thunder who ended on 1 November 1968

The operation, including bombing of Hanoi, was intended to force North Vietnam to cease its support to the National Liberation Front (South Vietnam communist rebellion). A total of one million tons of missiles, rockets and bombs have been droped during this operation

The proposition of Johnson, in a speech delivered in San Antonio (Texas) was a large concession of the USA. It was no more the condition that North Vietnam stop its support to NLF, but only to agree to negociate

It is only on 27 December that Hanoi answered by saying that negocations were possible only after the halt of American bombing

30 SEPTEMBER 2007

30 SEPTEMBER 1917 : BIRTH OF PARK CHUN-HEE

After 15 years of repressive government, Syngman Rhee, Major General Park Chung-hee carried out a military coup d'état followed by an anti-corruption campaign that was welcome by the general public.

As president, Park instituted central planning and industrial policy and looked to prewar Japan as model for developing the South Korean economy.

The Park administration was ultra-nationalistic and anti-market, harking back to a Confucian culture.

The Korean Central Intelligence Agency (KCIA), formed under the guidance of the US CIA, was Park's apparatus for domestic security.

Park normalized relations with Japan in 1965 amid massive popular anti-Japan protests at home.

Under Park, South Korea sent 300,000 troops to Vietnam, and was rewarded by the United States with war purchases that helped the Korean economy and political tolerance that consolidated his rule.

Park was assassinated on October 26, 1979. The assassin was the head of the KCIA, Kim Jae-kyu, who worked closely with the US CIA.
