12 OCTOBER 2007
12 OCTOBER 1976 : CHINA ANNOUNCES HUA GUOFENG IS ITS NEW LEADER
On that day, China announces that Hua Guofeng is the successor of the Late Mao Zedong as Chairman of the CPC. But he was already in charge since 7 October.
Born on 16 February 1921, he joined the CCP in 1938 and took part to the anti-Japanese war.
He was Security minister in 1975. The next year, he replaced Zhou Enlai as Prime Minister and some days before his dead (9 September 1976), Mao Zedong chosed him as his successor.
Hua Guofeng line was : To think as Mao, to speaks as Mao, to act as Mao.
For the reformists leaded by Deng Xiaoping it was a necessity to oust him.
In December 1978, the Deng faction took the control of the Central committee. Hua Guofen losed the premiership in 1980 and the presidence of the party in 1981. Expelled from the Central Committee, he quit the Central committee in 2002.
