Like in other parts of the country, the lawyers’ community in the provincial metropolis boycotted the court proceedings and staged protest demonstrations here on Saturday. PHCBA, DBA and NWFP Bar Council have once again demanded of the NWFP Chief Minister Akram Khan Durrani to advise NWFP governor for dissolution of NWFP Assembly without any further delay. The lawyers bodies also warned members of NWFP Assembly to avoid coming NWFP assembly building on October 6, otherwise they would be forced to take law and order into their own hands and beaten them up. The lawyers’ bodies through a resolution paid rich tribute to the three judges two from NWFP and one from Sindh, who said petitions against Musharraf’s dual office and strongly condemned the six judges who allowed President Musharraf to run for president in uniform. The Punjab judges, the resolution said, had always disappointed nation and lawyers community in judgments on national important issues. “The decisions of Justice Javed Iqbal, Justice Abdul Hameed Dogar, Justice Muhammad Nawaz Abbasi, Justice Faqir Muhammad Khokar, Justice Falak Sher, and Justice M Javed Buttar was for the military established as lawyers had already shown their distrust against these judges,” the resolution read out. The lawyers’ bodies also called upon the lawyers of NWFP to reach Peshawar on October 6 to besiege the NWFP Assembly and block the entry of MPAs to the Assembly premises in case the Assembly was not dissolved till October 6. Addressing a general body meeting of lawyers’ bodies, the PHCBA president Abdul Latif Afridi, strongly condemned violence against senior lawyers including Aitzaz Ahsan, Ali Ahmad Kurd and others. He said lawyers are united against Musharraf and the pro-military establishment could never block their way in toppling an illegal military rule in the country. Qazi Mohammad Anwar, chairman Pakistan Bar Council executive committee, said that NWFP two judges and one from Sindh have won hearts of the lawyers and people of their provinces for their bold and on merit judgments against President Musharraf’s re-election in uniform.Coming hard on the Chief Election Commissioner (CEC) he said that Qazi Farooq by accepting Musharraf nomination papers became the most hatred and corrupt person of Pakistan. Later, about 400 lawyers staged protest demonstrations in front of the Supreme Court Peshawar Registry Branch and NWFP Assembly. They were chanting slogans against the SC six judges who declared all petitions filed against President Musharraf’s re-election in uniform non-maintainable and anti-Musharraf slogans. Meanwhile, following the call of lawyers National Action Committee (NAC) lawyers across the NWFP observed complete boycott from court proceedings and were hoisted black flags at the courts precinct. In Islamabad, clashes and scuffles between the lawyers and police were erupted when police personals trying to arrests the lawyers and political workers gathered before Supreme Court building and the Parliament Lodges on Saturday on the time of scrutiny of nomination papers of Presidential candidates in the Election Commission. The lawyers had already called for protest on 29th against re-election of President Musharraf. So uniformed as well as plain clothed Rangers and police had been condoning off the Election Commission, Supreme Court and Parliament House sine the beginning of the day. However about 250 lawyers could successfully reach the constitution avenue Saturday morning and started chanting slogan against the government. About at 9 o clocks at the morning police ordered them to evacuate the area, the police resorted to baton charge when the lawyers refuse to move away. The Journalists standing there started to record the events. So the police began baton charging them. Police damaged camera of some of them. The clashes took a new twist when lawyers retreated and reorganized themselves for further protest, this time journalists also joined them. Police used tear gas and baton charge to disperse the protester. Another incident took place when State Minister for Information Tariq Azeem reached the scene at a time when some of the journalists were lying unconscious. The furious protesters started to beaten him. Another group of protesters tried to stop car of the Punjab Chief Minister. A journalist was injured when the official driver of the Chief Minister tried to escape the car. Several lawyers were also injured. MNA Zamarud Khan and opposition leader Aitizaz Ahsan were also got injuries during the clashes and pelting stones. Lawyer Ali Ahmad Kurd was arrested but he was released after a short time. Later on, the journalists assembled in front of the Election Commission to lodge their protest. Addressing the gathering President PFUJ Mazhar Abbas strongly condemned use of baton charge and tear gas as well as violence against the journalists and other protesters. He said that the Prime Minister’s dinner in honor of the journalists would be boycotted. He announced that a protest rally would be taken out from Islamabad Press Club to the Parliament House on Sunday. The whole day witnessed clashes on Constitution Avenue. Violence is increasing day by day in the country as oppositions are intensifying their protest against re-election of the President Musharraf. Similarly in Lahore, a heavy contingent of Lahore police Saturday resorted to baton charge and used tear gas to disperse a crowd of lawyers who were staging demonstration in front of election commission office in Lahore to press for the rejection of nomination papers of President Pervez Musharraf. As a result of police action against the lawyers, M.R. Awan and Lateef Sori received minor injuries while thee women lawyers fell unconscious. Earlier, the lawyers of District Bar Association staged a sit- in outside the PMG office at the lower Mall and raised emotionally charged slogans against President Pervez Mushrraf and demanded him to step down. The leaders of the DBA spoke on this occasion and condemned the violence of Islamabad administration against the peaceful lawyers and journalists. They pledged to continue their movement unless President Mushrraf is ousted from his office. The members of Lahore high court Bar Association also staged a sit- in on the Mall for over one hour and registered the protest against the beating of their colleagues at Islamabad. President of LHCBA and other lawyers addressed the protesters. They also announced that lawyers would observe black day on Monday all over the country and would boycott the court proceedings. Meanwhile, in Karachi the lawyers and journalists during their protest demonstrations, rallies and set-in were also baton charge by the contingents of Sindh Police on Saturday. The members of Sindh high court Bar Association staged a sit- in for over one hour and registered the protest against the beating of their colleagues at Islamabad. President of SHCBA and other lawyers addressed the protesters. They also announced that lawyers would observe black day on Monday (tomorrow) all over the country and would boycott the court proceedings
