Dear Linsi and others,
Maybe because Phillipines has recognised nannies as cash cows of the country it has been conferred a respectable tone. If given the chance will all those people working as nannies prefer other kind of occupation - such as teachers, office workers or even presidents?
To me, it shows that something must be wrong where people have to leave their country to work in jobs which are prone to exploitation of man over man, the haves over havenots.
Since a lot of those who are unfortunate to leave Burma and work in neighbouring countries as 'illegal workers' should we gave Burma a name as "A Nation of Illegal Workers"?
There is nothing to say about having 'comparative advantage' by working as nannies or illegal workers, it's just the ugly side of economic rationalism, don't you think?

Hi warazein,
yes, the philippine government has found the duck that lays the golden eggs through our nannies (domestic helpers, care givers etc)which keeps the economy afloat by sending billions of dollars yearly- the reason why Arroyo launched her "super maid" program which has been strongly criticized for the purposes of funding her political wheel--
most of our deomestic helpers must enrol in orientation course which is mandatory even to those who have been working as nannines for years abroad- because money is solicited through that course. one domestic helper have
suffered restraint for a time by not allowing her to leave for hong kong just because she must enrol in that "orientation course" when her employer for years
needs her back ASAP and therefore dropped her and got another maid in her stead.
I doubt if a filipina nanny earns respectable tone abroad,
in my own observation, most of them are treated in disdain
and categorized as "modern day slaves" specially by asian employers, where their own personal lives which were apart
from their job descriptions has been degraded at worst.
news of filipina maids being maltreated, raped, abused
has been reported in all international tabloids which we
seldom see happen in our skilled professional workers.

The Filipinos love to study, even poor people in the rural areas sacrifice a lot to send their children in school, many of our youth are willing to work to earn for their universiy studies, a university or college diploma in the philippines is priceless to us, it is beleived to be the only treasure parents can give to their children specially among the poor
that is also the reason why there is a comparative higher degree of literacy in the philippines compared to some south east asian countries where many foreigners enrol in our schools to get a diploma, and also the reason why the philippines has more people speaking english in southeast asia
(except for singapore which is categorically an english speaking nation)
A filipino's dream is to be a skilled professional inividual of the future-
therefore i would say that given the chance, our people would choose to work as professionals abroad.

hi warazein
There is a universal notion when we say "Illegal workers," it simply falls over all kinds of works in all kinds of fields.Anybody can be illegally working as a merchant, as a cook or chef, as a clerk,an entertainer or even as a prostitute, when standards or immigration requirements are not met, and even to higher degrees of professions when licenses and certifications are deemed bogus or fake or tampered.
But working legally as a domestic helper or nanny stamps out
a helper, a modern day slave doing menial jobs at the house of her master ( example of traditional chinese culture and other asian culture)thereby categorizing the phiippines as nation of nannies.
and therefore our workers, may they be of higher educational attainment (which is not recognized) or not, doing these jobs are more subject to cruelty, injustice and harrasments compared to our professional skilled workers abroad.
