Plastic shopping bags handed out free by supermarkets and street traders alike are an environmental menace.
They take up valuable landfill space when properly disposed of. And when they are not, they scar the landscape, block drains, create litter and cause harm to wildlife. Some countries have introduced schemes to impose a mandatory tax or levy on these bags. In Taiwan there has been an 80% reduction in their consumption, in Ireland 90%. Hong Kong has one of the biggest consumption rates in the world - 5 bags per person per day! Hong Kong proposes to introduce a scheme to levy plastic shopping bags at point of issue to the public and GHK has won the contract to review the international experience and formulate policy proposals. GHK have been commissioned by the Environmental Protection Department, Hong Kong SAR Government and will collect and assemble data on plastic bag production, import, usage and disposal in Hong Kong and stakeholder consultations will be undertaken. GHK will prepare the preferred scheme for implementation.

In China, as well as other Asian countries, a baby is considered one year old at birth and all birthdays are celebrated at New Year's.?

Tigers symbolize protection and and tiger tokens and symbols are given to the baby along with money and eggs for good luck. All over the world, babies and small children are dedicated at churches, shrines, temples and synagogues. Some cultures try to predict a child's future at this time, in other cultures parents tahnk God for protecting their children through the early years. Presenting a child at religious ceremonies is often marked by sending birthday flowers, special clothing , jewelry and food.
