Re:History tells that Taiwan is not a part of China 1 Year, 4 Months ago Karma: 25
In fact, the first Occident people who landed to Taiwan where the Portugeses, they gave the island name of "formosa" (meili in Chinese)

The Dutch arrived in 1624 but where ewpelled by a Ming general Cheng Cheng-kun (Kosinga) who fled the Mandchu invasion.

The Mandchu took Taiwan in 1683 and rised it as a China province in 1887, but by the 1895 Shimonoseki traty is has been ceaded to Japan.

On 1945, 25th october, China has been given back to China. Then the nationalist government of Jiang Kai-shek sent civil servants and soldiers to take control od the island, but in 1947 there was a revolt against the KMT rulers (around 19000 people have been killed)

On 1949 december 7, Jiang Kai-shek fled to Taiwan with 500 000 soldiers and 1 million civilians. Since this date, Taiwan is again separated from China.

Hi Linsi,

I prefer to continue on this forum rather than on Taiwan and WHO...

Chiang Kai-shek died in 1975 and his son, Chiang Ching-kuo became president in 1978. He suddenly died in 1988 and the vice-président, Lee Teng-hui, by the constitution, became president.

But Lee Teng-hui is a native of Taiwan. So he tried to change the One China policy and tried a "flexible diplomacy"

He said countries may have diplomatics relations with Taiwan as keeping relations with Beijing. In the same time he tried to return to the United nations with a special status. So Beijing strongly opposed any attempt by some countries. Chinese authorities hate him.

Worse for Beijing, since 2000, the president of Taiwan Chen Shui-bian belongs to the pro-independance party. So Beijing refuses any contact with him and is inviting only peoples from the KMT

hello jacques

this has bene too controversial for me haha! but anyway,we can talk about history, China's political wheel for reunification is another topic

Taiwan's status at that time was decided upon by the Manchu
Imperial authorities, because chiang kai shek came in later. He was from China? right?

I am afraid that Taiwan could be considered as a very corrupted country. For the next presidential, the KMT candidate is accused of embelzzement when he was mayor of Taipei. The current president, his wife and son-in-law are also condemned or soon to be judge for this kind of things.

Here is a very good article explaining the position of Taiwan on the proposed "one country, two systems". Even the KMT refuses it.

TAIWAN INTERNATIONAL POSTURE

After Costa Rica switched diplomatic relations to maintain China, the international posture knew a new major setback. Taipei is afraid that others Central America could follow.

THE STRANGE POSITION OF TAIWAN DIPLOMATS IN THE U.S.

The U.S. established diplomatic relations with Beijing on January 1, 1979.

Since, there is a de facto taiwanese ambassy in Washington, but its diplomats are denied to meet officialy the members of the US asministration.
