I guess, it's a combination of many different factors. In countries such as South Korea, mental illness still needs to be acknowledged. People don't seek professional help when they experience severe bouts of depression for fear of humiliation. "People labeled with mental illness in South Korea are treated as an extreme underclass."
Another factor could be societal pressure and conflict. Gays are still not generally accepted in Korean culture. Those who came out were expelled from their homes. Because of this rejection and shame, depression consequently sets in.

I think it's not special to South Korea. We can found the same phenomena in Japon where youngs by this way collectively go to suicide.

I'm sad to see that, but as in all other things in life, it's not the tool that is bad - it's how it's beeing used. So that's the way with internet too.
I just hope that it won't escalate in mass suicides and sects.

In Asia, and specialy "Chinese world" there is is lot of teenagers suicides, often because the pressure of the family to be the best at school or university.
Internet suicide meeting is a problem, but not only Internet. France has been very shocked by the suicides of three teenager girls fews days ago. They challenged themselves to do it by cellphone.
What a tragedy, every in the world to see teenagers to kill themself, when they just opening flowers
