When i heard about the news of how grave opium addiction is in Afghanistan, my heart sank..I was thinking of how devastated lives are for the families there..

but when i read about this article- hope sprang out, and it fortified my belief that we can make the wold a lot better...

an excerpt from this artcle says:

"After the fall of the Taleban, Rahima returned to Afghanistan and heard talk of the Sanga Amaj Drug Treatment Centre for women in western Kabul, funded by the US state department through the Afghan Ministry of Counter Narcotics"

The first of its kind in the area, the Sanga Amaj centre is named after a female journalist who was mysteriously shot dead in Kabul a few months ago.

After only a month's treatment at Sanga Amaj, Rahima was back to normal. She now works at the centre as a janitor, earning $100 a month.

"There is a lack of medical services in the countryside and most rural folk are poor and can't afford the medical fees," said Dennis Lam, a leading Hong Kong ophthalmologist, who has set up a non-profit charity called "Project Vision" which aims to treat cataract sufferers in rural China.

Cataracts -- the clouding of the lens of the eye which blocks out light eventually causing blindness -- is a major health problem in China.

Patients recovering from cataract operations are seen dressed in traditional Mongolian costumes before attending a ceremony marking the inauguration of Project Vision, a Hong Kong charity, at a hospital in Xilinhot, Inner Mongolia September 22, 2007. Cataracts are a major cause of blindness around the world. In China, nine million people are blind, half of them due to cataracts. Project Vision aims to create 100 centres around the country to perform cataract operations in places that need them most. (REUTERS/Bobby Yip)

School teaches blind to surf the Internet

MANILA, Philippines--HABER TARALA, 18, NEEDS TO DO research on a class project he has to submit the following day.

Blind since birth, Tarala uses a special software which allows him to use the computer the same way a sighted person would.

The student picked up his computer skills when he enrolled at the Adaptive Technology for Rehabilitation, Integration and Empowerment of the Visually Impaired (Atriev), a computer school for the blind on Kamias Road, Quezon City.

read more on how it is done--

Re:WE CAN CHANGE THE WORLD 4 Months, 3 Weeks ago Karma: 19

hello everyone

the philippines now is in such a mess due to
corruption charges against Arroyo, but our small group
who refuse to be identified in any way did something
to alleviate sufferings of some of our countrymen
in three districts in metro manila and we distributed
christmas bags in these depressed areas-

the mothers requested not fancy gifts, they wanted rice and noodles to last even three days after christmas,

and coordinators did their best to come up
with more than that-

toys and basic necessities were given out
and i know that with our little resources
we made a difference=

just happy to share all our asian friends
about changing a bad situation with our best

Dear Linsi,

You're right, especially when you did your bit to help someone recover their vision. A mere sum of $25 can help at least 6 people to regain their sight. We have this 'Fred Hollows Foundation' which is doing a fantastic job.

Of course, people with millions could do more but that shouldn't stop people like us with what little we have shouldn't give. All that matters is the intention.

I'm sure you're right when they say that "Hope dies last".

hi linsi,

more and more Filipinos should start forming small groups and bring much needed help.

i think small groups are more powerful than big organizations in making direct changes to the lives of our fellowmen.
