Re:WE CAN CHANGE THE WORLD 1 Year, 1 Month ago Karma: 19

Master Cheng Yen has been called "the Mother Teresa of Asia" and the "Red Cross of China"—where everyone knows her name.

As head of a small Buddhist temple in Taiwan, her generous followers number over four million.

Her work and influence through the Tzu Chi Foundation provides disaster relief throughout the world—from sending truckloads of food, blankets, and housing directly to people in need to building hospitals, colleges, research centers, and developing educational, social, and cultural programs.

http://www.simhas.org/chengyen.html

She was born in 1937 in Chingshui Village in Taichung County in Taiwan. Her uncle was childless, so she was given to be raised by her aunt and uncle. As early as 1945, she had to experience people’s pain and helplessness at the age of eight when she had to look after her sick brother in a hospital for eight months. At the age of 23, her father died suddenly from brain hemorrhaging caused by a stroke. It was in searching for a burial place for him that Cheng Yen first came into contact with the Buddhist Dharma.

I just watched a feature about Chen Yen,here in TVB Pearl, with some of the buddhist nuns with her, they raise their own foods in the small farm they have and live simple lives inspite of enurmous finances of tzu-chi foundation.

With the support of only thirty housewives who set aside NT fifty cents (US$0.013) of their grocery money each day, Master Cheng Yen embarked on her mission of helping the poor and educating the more prosperous. She and the newly formed Tzu Chi Merits Society established a charity fund to provide relief and assistance for the poor.

Hi Linsi

Tonight I came very late on A.O. because one of my friend invinted me to a diner, with very good french wine, to introduce me to a Vietnamese man living in France. Now retired this man is very much paid in US... for his expertise. He is paid 1000 $ a day for that. He give all this money to rejuvenate schools in Vietnam. He told me with only 200 $ he rejunenate one school.
In the wold there thousands of good people giving their time or their moneys to change the world. But it is not enough.

Kaiyoum is right. Education is the base for changing the world. Another way is to press our goverments to go in the good direction. For instance by the international help or to put an end at tragic situation as Darfur. It's too easy for the kingd of the world to delegate to NGO with the money of ordinary people

A country's debt is also a factor.
In my opinion, change must start within one's self first, influence his household, the community and so forth. We should live and let live. Adjust our ideas about satisfaction and not let money be the center of our lives.
Unless everybody's willing to give up something for others then changing the world is not a possibility.
To have a model like what Mr. Jacques has pointed out is an good option because it has been tried and tested but everything has to be customised according to the given situation of a country.

Hi jacques
I understand what you mean, i agree we cannot change the world, but like the exemplary lives of Christ, Buddha, and millions of heroes who have walked this earth, they gave their best to make this world a better place to live in. I think the title of this thread which goes" We can change the world" means more of individual contributions to help only those whom we can reach, and at least ease the burden in our own little way.

so you came in late in AO because you had a dinner with a very good french wine , nice to know that.

Hi Jon2

I am happy we could become friends. I don't like conflict situation. My karma wans going up and down and I never know why. If i deagree with what a member said, I never put down his karma. Every one is free of his opinion and I respect his point of view, even it is not mine.

Because your open mind position and your constructive action on A.O. i also upgrate your Karma

Mr Pun and his small world..

Casino casualties

In the heart of town off a quiet square, is a Catholic charity run by a softly-spoken, earnest middle-aged man, Paul Pun.

He is based in a dingy, run-down building, which is the antithesis of neon glamour.

Nearby are some elegant colonial houses with their pastel-shaded roofs.

Lose your shirt on the spin of a roulette wheel, and the authorities might suggest you pay Mr Pun a visit.

Mr Pun and his people offer counselling and enough money for the ferry ride home
We're getting busier every year," he says.

He points to the next door room. "There's a woman in there, a factory owner from the mainland. She's just lost $100,000 - that's nearly £50,000. We want to speak to her, but every time she tries to talk she bursts into tears."

Mixed up with the betting is the money laundering.
