OK - so you've decided to go to China. And you want to visit five really nice destinations that together will give you a genuine experience of the most populous country in the world. What five should you pick?
The Great Wall, maybe? Or the terracotta figures in Xian?
Or maybe there are some other destinations that really should be put as high on the list.
The challenge goes to our users: Give us your list of the top five destinations in China! And why did you pick those five?

Here is my suggestion:
1. The great wall. It just got to be on any such list.
2. Shanghai. I don't know of any city in the world with such energy. Even Hong Kong pales in comparison.
3. The terracotta army in Xian. Magnificent!
4. Lijiang in Yunnan. A wonderful place to relax for a few days.
5. Qingping market in Guangzhou. Because it is something else.

I've never been to China, but I would surely love to see following:
1.Great wall
2.The Mogao Caves - the height of Buddhist art, world's richest treasure house of Buddhist artwork
3.Forbidden City
4.The silk road - tour it, see the ancient travellers rout
5.Hukou Waterfalls on Yellow river, the only yellow waterfall in the world
Besides, I would surely took someone to guide me to great historical locations. I would like it if you can suggest some, of course.

Post edited by: admin, at: 2007/01/17 14:32

I went to China two years ago. I cannot give you the top five, but will tell you what I liked the most.
1. Great Wall. We hiked on the wall and it was the greatest experience of my life.
2. Tiananmen square in Beijing. It is impressive and it was a rather emotional experience to stand there thinking of the historic significance.
3. Tibet. Nothing compares to it - although I am hesitant to include it in "China" destinations.

Jacques, I'll take note of your suggestions. I just talked to my friend in Shanghai and told her about my intention to visit her there this year. She suggested I come in October, still not too cold by then because it'd still be autumn season.
if any of you guys plans to go the Philippines, let me know. I'm a willing tour guide! Disclaimer: if work permits only.
