Mao Zedong made nothing to limit the size of the population. He wa from a farmer family, and in the countryside, one means two arms for the farm. In addition, he thank that the more China is populous, the more its weight in the wolrd could be more important.

But when Deng Xiaoping took the power in December 1978, he launched the "four modernizations" programm and opened China to foreign investors. But the rise of GNP was counterbalanced by the rise of the population, so It's the origine of the One-child policy.

Only the urban are obliged to apply the "One-child policy" and the ethnic minorities are not. In the rural areas, the peasants can have a second child if the first is a girl.

In total, only 35,9 % of the population are limited to one child only.

One of the main problem about the "One child policy" is

THE IMBALENCE BETWEEN BOYS AND GIRLS

Yes, no one seems to wonder who their sons will be marrying. What I find aggravating is that the dearth of females, FARRR from giving them a bit more leverage, is having the opposite effect. Kidnappings and selling of women for brides, look at India, a teenage girl was beheaded for refusing to sleep with all the bros of her husband. China of course is so vast that the policies of the government just don't extend to the countryside, it's business as usual. Sons to care for you in your old age. Nothing personal girls, just business, as the mob likes to say when they whack you.
