Some people are saying including some so called Buddhist monks are saying that cyclone disaster and devastation in Myanmar is because of SPDC. Its cracked down on Buddhist monks in September 2008. There are many interpretations. Some said this is the punishments from God to SPDC. Some said this is the punishments to the people who supports NLD. Some said this is the warning from God, Some said it is because of so called Buddhist monks and lay people who misused the Budhism and who abuse the Buddhism. Buddhist Monks are supposed to be Holy that is why they are called Phone Gyi. How Holy are they we cannot say. We can only go to the books of knowledge. In this case, Buddhist scriptures.
Here is a chance for Buddhists and none Buddhist to study about so called Buddhist monks in Myanmar.
From time to time a religious person popped up in this forum and shared us his knowledge with us. Very kind of him.
Since that crack down Buddhism itself has come under scrutiny. Is it the Buddhism or the Monks who needs to be scrutinised?
In Buddhism. Paya,( Buddha ) Taya ( his teachings) and Thangar, the monks. are the most holiest. Buddha said worshiping Him is of no use, one should follow His teachings. How much do we follow, how much do the Buddhist monks follow Buddha’s teachings?
Generally speaking Monks are among respectable kind. But according to Buddha in his teachings of 38 Mingalas, “ Puzatsa Puza Neya Nan ’’ means to pay respect to those who are respectable, who deserves respects . You don’t have to respect or pay respect to any bald headed punks who wears yellow or saffron coloured robe.
According to Buddha’s own words there are three stages to look at the morality of a monk. The Monk is known as a Bhikkhu in Pali. The three are Cula Sila
( minor morality,) Majjhima Sila ( middle morality) and Maha Sila ( major morality. Which the monks need to observed,
To promote the monks, in their propaganda they say “ Than Gar Sarr Thaw Swunn Ta Nutt’’ in Mysanmar. Monk life is not easy life it has to be worth living on the food offered out of faith.
Cula Sila.
According to Cula Sila ( minor morality ) a monk must abandon all thoughts of taking life and abstains from destruction of life , setting aside the stick and the sword, ashamed to do evil and he is compassionate and dwell with solitude for the welfare of all living beings,
He abandon all thoughts of taking what is not given and abstaining from what is not given to him . Accepting only what is given whishing to receive only what is given. He established himself in purity by abstaining from committing thefts.
He abandons all thoughts of leading a life of unchastely, and practise chastity , remaining virtuous and abstinent from sexual intercourse which is the practise of lay people.
He abandons all thought of telling lies and abstains from telling lies , speaking only the truth, combining truth with truth, , and remaining steadfast , trustworthy and not deceiving.
He abandons all thought of slandering, abstains from slander.Hearing things from those people he does not relate them to these people to sow the seed of discord among them. He reconciles those who are at variance. He encourages those who are in accord. He delights in unity, loves it and rejoices in it. He speaks to create harmony.
He abandons all thoughts of speaking harshly and abstains from harsh speak.
He speaks only blameless words, pleasing to ear affectionate, going to the heart , courteous, pleasing to many and heartening to many.
He abandons all thoughts of talking frivolously, and abstains from frivolous talk. His speech is appropriate to the occasion , being truthful beneficial consistent with the Doctrine and the Discipline , memorable , timely and opportune, with reasons confine within limits and conducive to welfare.
He abstains from destroying all seeds and vegetation, taken only one meal a day, not taken food at night and fasting after mid-day.
He abstains from dancing, singing , music and watching entertainments that is a stumbling block to the attainment of morality.
He Abstains from wearing flowers, using perfume s and anointing with unguents.
He abstains from the use of high and luxurious beds and seats.
He abstains from acceptance of gold and silver. uncooked cereals, uncooked meat , women and maidens, male and female slaves, goats and sheep, chicken and pigs, elephants, cattle, horses and mares, cultivated or uncultivated land.
He abstains from acting as messenger or courier
He abstains from buying and selling.
He abstains from using false weights and measures and counterfeits .
He abstains from dishonest practice as bribery cheating and fraud.
He abstains from maiming , murdering , holding persons in captivity , committing highway robbery, plundering villages and committing dacoity.
Majjima Sila.
According to Majjima Sila ( middle morality ) a monk must abstain from destroying seeds and vegetation such as root - germs, node-germs, plumule-germs and seed germs.
abstain from storing up cooked rice, beverages clothing, sandals , beds unguents and eatables.
abstains from entertainments such as, dancing, singing, music, shows, recitations hand-clapping, brass- instruments - playing, drum playing, art exhibitions, playing with an iron ball, bamboo raising games, rituals of washing the bones of the dead, elephant -fights, horse -fights, buffalo-fights, bull-fights , goats-fights sheep-fights, cock-fights, quail-fights, fighting with quarter- staffs,
Boxing, wrestling , military tattoos, military reviews , route-marches, and troop movements .
abstains from betting and taken parts such sports and games such as playing chess on eight square or ten square, boards , playing imaginary chess using sky as chess board, playing chess on a moon-shaped chess board, flipping cowries with thumb and finger, throwing dice, playing tipcat, playing with brush and paint, playing marbles, whistling games with folded leaves, playing with miniature ploughs, acrobatics, turning palm leaf, wheels measuring with toy-baskets made of leaves, playing wit miniature chariots , playing with small bows and arrows, alphabetical riddles, mind-reading and simulating physical defects .
abstains from using high and luxurious beds and furnishings such as high couches, divans, raised on sculptured legs, long-fleeced carpets, woollen carpets with quaint designs , white woollen coverlets , woollen with floral designs, mattresses coverlets stuffed with cotton, woollen coverlets with pictorial designs, wool;len coverlets with fringes on one or both side , gold-brocaded coverlets, silk coverlets , large carpets wide enough for sixteen dancing girls to dance on, saddle, cloth and trapping for elephants and horses, upholstery for carriages, rugs made of black panther’s hide, antelope’s hide , red canopies and couches with red bolsters at each end.
abstains from using perfumes, cosmetics, getting massage, taking perfumed bath, developing one‘s physique, using mirrors, painting eyelashes dark, decorating oneself with flowers, applying powder and lotion to the body beautifying the face with powder and lotion , wearing bangles , tying the hair into atop-knot, carrying walking stick or ornamented hollow cylinders ( containing medicinal herbs) or swords, using multi-coloured umbrella or foot- wear with gorgeous designs, wearing a turban, or a hair pin set with rubies, carrying a Yak-tail fan , and wearing long white robes with fringes.
abstains from engaging himself in unprofitable talk, such as talk about Kings, thieves, ministers, armed forces, calmities, battles, food , drinks, clothing, beds, flowers, unguents relatives, vehicles, villages , market-townss, cities, provinces, womenfolk, heroes, streets, water-fronts, the dead and the departed , trivialities , the universe, the oceans, prosperity , adversity and so on.
Abstains from mutually disparaging disputes such as, “ you do not know this Doctrine and Discipline. I know this Doctrine and Discipline. How c an you ever know this Doctrine and Discipline. Your practice is wrong . My practice is right. What I say is coherent and sensible. What you should say first, yopu say last, and what you should say last , you say first. What you have long practised tosay has been upset now. I have exposed the faults in your doctrine. You stand rebuke Try to escape from this censure, or explain it if you can “
abstains from serving as messengers or couriers such as going from this place to that place or coming from that place to this place taking things from this place to that place, or from that place to this place, on behalf of Kings , ministers, Brahmins , house -holders and youths.
abstains from practising deceitful pretension( to attainment) and flattery( for gain) subtle insiuatuion by signs or indictions ( for gain) using pressure ( to get offerings) and the seeking of more gain by cunning offerof gifts.
Maha Sila
And last of all Maha Suila ( Major Morality )
A buhkkhu abstains from fortune telling from a study of physical characteristic, or of signs and omens, or of lighting, interpreting dreams , reading physiognomy, prognosticating from a study of rat-bites, indicating benefits from fire-oblation with different kinds of firewood, or with different kinds of ladles, or with husks , brokrn rice, whole rice, clarified butter, oil, oral spells, or with blood, reading physiognomy while chanting spells, forecasting good and bad fortune from the signs and marks of a piece of land, being versed in state affairs , reciting spells in the graveyard to eliminate dangers, to overcome evil spirits, using magical formulae learent in a mud-house, charming snakes, and curing snake-bites, treating poisoning, curing scopion -stings or rat-bites , interpreting animal and bird sounds and cawing of crows, foretelling the remaining lenth of life , diverting the flight of arrows, and identifying the cries of animals.
Abstains from reading the portents of gems, dresses, sticks, daggers, swords, arrows, bows and other weapons, reading the characteristic of women, men, young women and young men, male slaves, female slaves, elephants horses, buffloes , bulls and other c attle, goats, sheep, chicken, quail s , iguanas, pointed eared animals, tortoises and game-beasts.
Abstains from wrongful living by means of low arts such as making prediction about Kings going to war, coming back from war, about Kings advancing in the battles from their own country about Kings from foreign country retreating About Kings from foreign advancing in the battle and about Kings retreating to their own country, aboy Kings from their own country winning the battles, , about Kings in their own country loosing the battle, and about probabilities of victories and looses of warring Kings.
Abstains from making prediction about the eclipse of the moon or of the sun, about the conjunction of a group of stars with a planet, about the correct or incorrect course of the moon, the sun and the planets, about meteors, comets, earth quake, and thunder, about the rising and setting of the sun and the moon, about the phenomena of darkness and brightness following such rising and setting , about the effect of the eclipse of the moon, or of the sun and or of the planets, about the effect of the moon or the sun taking the right course or the wrong course, about the planets taking the right course or the wrong course, about the effect of the meteor , comets, earthquakes, and thunder, about the effect of the rising and setting of the moon and of the sun or of the planets, and about the effects of the phenomena of darkness or brightness following such rising and setting.
Abstains from predicting rainfall, or drought, abundance or famine, peace or calamity, disease or health, and knowledge of counting on the fingers or of arithmetical or mathematical calculations , of versification and of treaties on controversial matters ( such as the origin of the universe)
Abstains from making a wrongful living, such as bringing the bride to bridegroom leading away the bride from her father’s home , arranging betrothal or divorce, making prediction relating to a question or distribution of property ,causing gain and loss of fame and prosperity , curing the tendency to abort or miscarry , casting spell to cause immobility
Abstains from making a wrongful living such as, propitiating the devas by promises of offering . Making offerings to the devas for favours granted , causing possession by spirits or exorcising them, casting spell with magical formulae learnt in a mud-house practicing the art of choosing the building sites, propitiating the devas while choosing building sites, practising the profession of mouth-washing and bathing, fire-worshipping, causing vomiting, given purgatives, using emetics , or catharses, letting out phlegm etc. from the head, preparing ear drops, or eye drops preparing medical stuff or eye ointment to remove cataracts, preparing eye lotion, curing cataracts, doing surgery , practising paediatrics , preparing basic drugs and dressing the sores and removing the dressing.
A Bhikkhu thus endowed with morality encounters no danger in an way arising out of his practice of morality. A sovereign , duly anointed and installed as King after having defeated his enemies can encounter no danger whatsoever from his enemies. In the same way a Bhikkhu thus endowed with morality encounters no danger in anyway arising out of his practice of morality. That Bhikkhu possessing this noble group of moral precepts, enjoy within himself happiness that is free from blame.
Thus is a Bhikkhu endowed with morality.
Buddha has professised that his sons, meaning Monks, not Rahulal, will destroy his Sasana. If the monks can destroy Sasana, what is Myanmar, a piece of cake for them.
Can we protect the Sasana? How will we do it ?
