BANGKOK, March 21 (Xinhua) -- Thai Foreign Minister Noppadon Pattama told his U.S. counterpart Secretary of State Condoleezza Rice that Thailand disagreed with the U.S. on the latter's approach on solving the Myanmar issue by imposing sanction, Thai News Agency reported Friday.
Noppadon made clear Thailand's reconciliatory policy on Myanmar during a meeting with Rice in Washington DC Thursday, the second day of his visit to the United States.
"When asked about the Myanmar problem, I insisted on adoption of talks and ASEAN engagement, which are better than sanction as imposed by the U.S. We disagree with the sanction," said the Thai foreign minister.
As Thailand is assuming the chairmanship of ASEAN, of which both Myanmar and Thailand are members, this July, Noppadon pledged to employ ASEAN engagement to persuade Myanmar's military government to solve conflicts through reconciliatory methods.
The Myanmar issue is expected to be raised during the upcoming ASEAN summit scheduled to be held in Thailand late this year. @
