Myanmar issue in the Chairman’s Statement of the 13th ASEAN Summit is as follows.

"16. We had an extensive and open discussion on Myanmar. We were given a comprehensive briefing by Myanmar PM Thein Sein, where he emphasized that the situation in Myanmar was a domestic affair, and that Myanmar was fully capable of handling the situation by itself. He reaffirmed that Myanmar had every confidence in managing the good offices of the UN. As ASEAN Chair, Singapore issued a statement to clarify ASEAN's role and stand. We reiterated that the Myanmar Government should continue to work with the UN in order to open up a meaningful dialogue with Daw Aung San Suu Kyi and the National League for Democracy (NLD); make full use of the good offices of the UN Secretary-General and Professor Gambari in this process; lift restrictions on Daw Aung San Suu Kyi and release all political detainees; work towards a peaceful transition to democracy; and address the economic difficulties faced by the people of Myanmar. We emphasized that we will strive to prevent the Myanmar issue from obstructing ASEAN's integration efforts, especially the ASEAN Charter and the establishment of the ASEAN Community".

Asean statement is all about reconciliation between DASSK (NLD) and the regime, transition to democracy and addressing the social difficulties of Myanmar people.

If the regime is honest and sincere about this process, they should not be talking about all nonsense. The New Light of Myanmar reported on Monday that “there was no reason to hold further discussions with any person or any organization except at the National Convention”, despite the ongoing meetings between pro-democracy leader Aung San Suu Kyi and the Burmese Minister for Relations, Aung Kyi.

In that case, Is Than Shwe brave enough to cancel out whatever the UN, ASEAN and the world community effort to engage national reconciliation with DASSK? And also get rid of NLD as they had planned before? Is the regime ready to challenge people and the global power? Why not go ahead and see what will happen? 500,000 troops firepower good enough for 50 over millions people’s power?

Than Shwe also claimed at the 2007 annual general meeting of the Union Solitary and Development Association that “the economic and social standards of people in Myanmar had improved and the literacy rate had increased to 94.75 percent, and that life expectancy of Burmese people had risen due to the development of the military government's healthcare system”.

So, what is the effort of UN and ASEAN? Myanmar is now developing to a better future and ASEAN has wrongly reported in the statement. May be ASEAN has not fully cooperate with the regime for the issue. One could suggest the statement needs to be reviewed and amended accordingly before the end of Summit.
