Essential commodity price skyrocket in Burma
Mizzima News (www.mizzima.com)
August 18, 2007 - The sudden increase in the price of fuel has automatically led to a rise in prices of essential commodities causing resentment among residents in Burma's former capital, Rangoon.
Essential commodities have increased following the sudden hike in fuel prices on August 14. The government has raised prices of petrol to 2,500 kyat (US$ 2) and diesel to 3,000 kyat (US$ 2.30) from 1,500 kyat (US$ 1.15). The price of Compressed Natural Gas (CNG) rose to 273 Kyat from 54 kyat per kilogram.
A house wife in Rangoon told Mizzima following the hike fuel prices, the price of Paw San Mwe rice, has risen to 28,000 kyat (US$ 21.53) up from 25,000 kyat (US$ 19.23) per bag containing approximately 55 kilograms. Price of edible oil rose to 3,000 kyat (US$ 2.30) from 2,500 kyat (US$ 2) per Viss (approximately 2.30 Kg).
The prices of meat – pork rose to 6,000 kyat (US$4.6) per kilogram, mutton from 7,000 kyat (US$ 5.38) to 8,000 (US$ 6.15) per kilogram, and garlic from 1,000 kyat (76 cents) to 1,500 kyat (US$ 1.15) per kilogram, while the price of eggs rose from 80 kyat to 120 per piece, and Burmese noodle, Mohin Khar, rose from 100 kyat to 300 kyat per plate, the woman added.
"The condition of government employees is worse. We get just over 20,000 kyat (US$ 15.38) so it is impossible to make ends meet. We have to spend about 1,000 kyat (76 cents) for bus fare a day, so there is no way we can make do with our salaries," the government employee told Mizzima.
While commodity prices in Burma have steadily mounted in the past, the situation has worsened following the sudden hike in fuel prices on August 14.
Bus fares have risen to an all time high so a number of people have opted to walk considerable distances as they can no longer afford the fares, said a resident of Rangoon.
Meanwhile, Myanmar Development Committee (MDC), led by Htin Kyaw, who was arrested thrice in the recent past for protesting against the high prices of essential commodities, has declared that unless the government immediately resolves the problems arising from price rise in a week, they will take to the streets in protest.
IS IT THE BEGINNING OF ________ OR THE BEGINNING OF THE END OF_________ ??????????????
