Is today's Internet killing our culture? 1 Year, 1 Month ago Karma: 6
My regular visit to my favorite bookstore yesterday gave me the opportunity to read the newly released book, "The Cult of the Amateur: How today's Internet is killing our culture" by Andrew Keen.

In this book Keen argues that as digital world becomes more and more free and independent, it unfortunately creates negative impact on the economy, culture and values.

He discussed the occurence of perrenial problems in the Internet such as pornography, lack of censorship online, issues of piracy and copyright, Internet addiction and online gambling.

Keen also expressed alarm about the lowering standard of journalism with the growing acceptance of ordinary bloggers as citizen journalists. He narrated how iTunes killed Tower Records because now people have stopped buying CDs in favor of downloading on iTunes.

For someone who works in the Internet industry with particular passion about web2.0, I didn't expect that I'd enjoy reading this book. It made me rethink of the responsibility of web professionals like me to the people using the Internet.

Do you agree to the author that Internet is actually killing our culture?
