I work on Asia, and I am looking for some Internet sites who can help me (and some others A. O. members who wrote to me to support me) to know what happends and understand in Asia.

If A.O. become a site to discuss if "Is Internet a necessary" or "what pisses you off", subjets that have nothing to do with Asia, you are right, I have to find another serious Internet site to contribute with, but Asia Observer to change its name

Mr. Jacques,

Do whatever suits your fancy. You have the right to do so. I hope you can extend that same approach with the other members here.

Thank you.

hi jacques

you have a point and jon2 also has a point, this topic falls on the "nonsense"tab but i guess you wanted it more specific to mean nonsense tete-a te- about Asia.

can you tell us what exactly do you mean?.

a nonsense which is somehow related to Asia?
like for example " Is internet a necessity or luxury in developing countries in Asia something like that?

sometimes we have to explain it more, so that no point is missed and all can have more grasp of what you really intended to say

cheers

Miss Linsi,
You're an angel who can stop brewing wars. Thanks for that helpful comment.
I didn't mean to be confrontational, I respect Mr. Jacques' efforts for making AO a sensible, serious site but since we're in a section of the forums that tackles with 'everything under the sun', it didn't occur to me that topics here can be limited to a certain subject. I have to admit that the current topic is indeed vague but it appealed to the readers anyway so why question it?
I understand that there are those who see the grim and the ugly side of things an attraction and they find reason to bring it up, I'm cool with that. Information is information to me. But I am a person who works hard everyday too and when I log on, I'd want something to take my mind off the grim realities of life, at least for a while. That I think is one of the purpose and appeal of a Nonsense or non formal section in forums.
By the way, I'm an asian. My point of view qualifies as a point of view of an asian guy.
Thank you.

Oh and by the way, I frequent BBC.com also... Bigtime serious stuff right? Maybe you'd like to ask why they tackle subjects like "Vampires" or Walspugit Nights.
Cheers...

I didn't realize that there was an issue about the topics I started on this Forums until I bumped into this thread again. I don't think I need to explain the reason why I started this topic under NonSense Forums. Enough has been said. That, by all means, anything goes here.

Strike me if you found my posts nonsense and irrelevant and they are in the topics that require serious discourse. I don't think I'd ever become irresponsible to do that.

By the way, there are changes in the offing as John has mentioned in another thread. We sincerely hope that you’d appreciate the improvements as we start implementing them.

Cheers.

Not wanting to get into the bun fight that seems to be brewing here I think it's a very interesting question to be posed on AO.

Consider for a moment the vast differences in the socio-economic ranges of region.

While internet is undoubtedly a necessity for businesses in the region, can the same thing be said for private users ?

Poorly developed traditional telephone systems in many countries in the region have seen handphone (cellphone, mobile phones or whatever you want to call them) adopted in the region at a much faster rate than many western countries.

It would be interesting to know the internet growth for countries in the region. And what people are using their internet connections for.

Also, a comparison of the rates being charged throughout the region.

Whether people are using their internet access for social, education or business purposes is another aspect that needs to be considered when looking at this question.

Is being online a waste of time ? By who's standard ? Even if people are using the net for social networking purposes isn't it helping to close the gap between cultures ?

Is internet access an expensive necessity or a relatively cheap form of entertainment ? And are people primarily accessing it from home, work or from internet cafes ?

Lets post some access costs and typical speeds and get a comparison throughout the region.

After all, there's lots of telco's in the region making plenty of money from internet growth.

As a journalist I spend many hours a day online researching and social networking. To me its a valuable tool - which makes it a necessity.

As a DJ I also spend many hours online to stay up to date with the latest music I can play in my sets. This also makes it a necessity.

I suspect for many people in the region though its both a necessary and a luxury.
