JAPAN REAFIRMS STATEGIC PRIORITY

On June 13, the Japanese government approved the latest edition of its annual defense white paper, "Defense of Japan 2007." The report identifies North Korea and China as Tokyo's primary strategic concerns while reaffirming Japan's alliance with the United States, commitment to international peacekeeping, and intent to keep defense spending slightly below 1 percent of its gross domestic product (some $39 billion).

Since 1945, in the USA and Japan, there is a big debate about

WHAT DROVE JAPAN'S DECISION TO SURRENDER ?

For someones it is the dropping of atomic bombs, for the others it is the threat of a Soviet invasion.

For Tsuyoshi Hasegowa, it is definitively Soviet invasion.

The paper is also very interesting on the behavour of the emperor Hirohito in these crucial days.

A NEW OLD PRIME MINISTER FOR JAPAN

After the youngest Prime Minister in Japan history, Shinzo Abe, who has been in charge for less of one year, his successor, Yasuo Fukuda, elected on 25 September 2007, is the oldest since early 1990s.
