A SHOCKING ARTICLE FROM INTERNATIONAL HERALD TRIBUNE:

Social workers are trying to combat a disturbing trend in South Korea: People using the Web to trade tips about suicide and in some cases to form suicide pacts.

Any comments? Why is this happening?

I guess, it's a combination of many different factors. In countries such as South Korea, mental illness still needs to be acknowledged. People don't seek professional help when they experience severe bouts of depression for fear of humiliation. "People labeled with mental illness in South Korea are treated as an extreme underclass."

Another factor could be societal pressure and conflict. Gays are still not generally accepted in Korean culture. Those who came out were expelled from their homes. Because of this rejection and shame, depression consequently sets in.

I think it's not special to South Korea. We can found the same phenomena in Japon where youngs by this way collectively go to suicide.

You're right, Jacques. Suicide incidents aren't exclusive to Korea. Suicide rate is also high in Japan (with the Agriculture minister having ended his life just very recently), and even in Singapore. When I was there two years ago, I was surprised to see outdoor advertisements promoting free counseling advice to individuals experiencing severe depression, anxiety and stress.

Three years ago, Indian teens were reported to have the highest suicide rate in the world.

With regard to cases in Korea, it's just a little disturbing to know that the Internet has become yet again a convenient tool for another wrongful action.

I'm sad to see that, but as in all other things in life, it's not the tool that is bad - it's how it's beeing used. So that's the way with internet too.

I just hope that it won't escalate in mass suicides and sects.

Internet suicide meeting is a problem, but not only Internet. France has been very shocked by the suicides of three teenager girls fews days ago. They challenged themselves to do it by cellphone.

What a tragedy, every in the world to see teenagers to kill themself, when they just opening flowers
