The opposition set to make revenge against GMA? 1 Year, 2 Months ago Karma: 6
Opposition senator Jinggoy Estrada uttered publicly that once President GMA is out of office, his family will give her a dose of her own medicine. He obviously sounded vindictive and cruel. He argued that PGMA abused her power in order to press criminal charges against him and his father, former President Joseph Estrada.

On the contrary, newly-reelected Senator Ping Lacson said he will not take vindictive actions against the Arroyos. He even appealed to other opposition leaders to focus on doing their job in the Senate- that is to make legislative work and pass bills necessary to make the nation move forward.

Do you believe Lacson is being true to his word when he says he's not up for revenge against the Arroyos? Or he's just starting to gear up for the 2010 presidential elections that he wants a clean slate at this early all for 'good grooming'?

Ping Lacson is definitely grooming himself for the 2010 presidential elections. But so are opposition senators Loren Legarda, Kiko Pangilinan, Manny Villar and Mar Roxas.

Lacson's advantage is his strongman image. He is, however, tainted with his involvement in the Estrada administration and some human rights cases, which includes the disappearances of unionists, militant peasants and activist leaders in his stint as Cebu Metrocom Chief in the early 90s.

Pangilinan has a Megastar but it would be far too early for him to run for president by 2010. Legarda almost won as vice-president in 2004 and is the chart topping senatoriable last May.

And there's Villar. Notice that his TV ads mimicked Mar Roxas' Mr. Palengke ads. Roxas overwhelmingly won the most number of votes in the 2004 elections.

The opposition senators will be busy preparing for the 2010 to really seriously think about revenge. There would be a lot of grandstanding, however. And this will definitely be against the Arroyo administration.

Serves her right for all the human rights abuses of her illegitimate regime.

Well, the Philippine government has 3 branches - the executive branch, the judiciary and the legislature. The Congress functions as the legislature and is divided into 2 chambers.

The lower chamber is called the House of Representatives and is composed of around 200 local district reps. Hence, electing them is a local excercise.

The other chamber is the Senate. It has 24 members which are elected at large in a nationwide electoral exercise which coincides with the local polls.

Thanks Karlom87

Are the senators directly elected by voters on national lists or by area or indirectly by qualified voters (mayors...)

Can the senate to block a law ?

Hi Jacques,

Senators are elected through national elections. Hence, it's the voting public that put them to public office.
