Hi Linsi,

You put an message on "Jacques eye on Asia" that I think, because concerning HK would be better in this forum. Can you move it ?

since the topic speaks of hong kong here, i wanted to post
a switch to a more timely issues,
a more relevant subject about hong kong's domestic workers
and how they fare with chinese employers-

high education of FDH's has come to be seen as objectionable quality" because an educated domestic worker is more likely to put on airs and to present herself as too good to do what is expected of her.

many middle-class chinese employers consider the english-language abilities of filipinas beneficial and many expect "helpers" to tutor their children.

but agency staff and members of the employers association both insist that many chinese employers favor less educated domestic workers because "they know their place.

As the owner of one of Hong Kong's biggest employment agency explained today " the high education of FDH's has come to be seen as objectionable quality" because an educated domestic worker is more likely to put on airs and to present herself as too good to do what is expected of her.

One staff member explained that her agency prefers women from the provinces who have little education. In her words
"the applicants with higher education... argue more with their employers, some even have the gall to ask their employers how many degrees they have..

so the notion that higher education and english speaking now becomes objectionable to chinese employers-

Against Child Abuse

In April, 2006, four small children were found being neglected by their parents when the
only caretaker was their 83-year-old grandmother (“The Pak Tin Estate incident”). The
incident has aroused much media attention, which reminded us of the serious and unresolved
problem of child neglect in Hong Kong...

My POV-

This is one of the gravest problems in Hong Kong concerning domestic abuse and neglect of children.

The high rising cost and standard of living in this terrortory drives every parent to work both, most of the time taking the risk of leaving children home alone to sustain and maintain everyday living.

one of the articles which i posted, happened recently, causing people to catch government's attention and steering the social welfare department on how to address the problem.

This room would speak more about domestic life in Hong kong
and related stories involving culture and attitudes
on how people face and decide living in accordance
to situations and regulations mostly
governing families inside the home.

Poor Students in Hong Kong to Get Notebook Computers
The Hong Kong government has decided to appropriate 200 million H.K. dollars from an education fund to buy notebook computers for poor students in public schools.

A government official said the decision will benefit the students from low-income families who can not afford personal computers. About 40,000 students receiving financial aid or subsidies are expected to become beneficiaries.
